Saltwater systems require careful coordination between filtration, circulation, lighting, rockwork, livestock selection, water chemistry, and ongoing maintenance.

  • Reef tanks: Coral-focused systems designed around suitable lighting, water movement, filtration, and stable water parameters.
  • Marine fish systems: Saltwater aquariums centered on compatible marine fish, appropriate habitat, and reliable biological filtration.
  • Advanced setups: More complex systems that may include sump filtration, dosing equipment, controllers, specialized circulation, and custom plumbing.

Our Installation Process

From Initial Consultation to a Stable System

Each stage is planned to create an aquarium that fits the space, supports the intended livestock, and can be cared for consistently.

  1. Consultation

    We begin by discussing the available space, preferred aquarium type, desired livestock, appearance, budget considerations, and expected level of involvement.

    Aquariums under 200 gallons can typically begin with a phone consultation. Systems over 200 gallons generally require an in-person consultation to evaluate access, placement, utilities, structural considerations, and installation requirements.

  2. Design

    The aquarium dimensions, placement, aquascape, livestock direction, filtration approach, and maintenance needs are developed into a complete system plan.

  3. Equipment Selection

    Filtration, lighting, heaters, circulation pumps, controllers, skimmers, return pumps, and other equipment are selected according to the specific needs of the aquarium.

    Equipment recommendations prioritize appropriate capacity, compatibility, serviceability, and reliable long-term operation.

  4. Installation

    The aquarium, stand, filtration, equipment, substrate, hardscape, and supporting components are assembled and prepared for operation.

    Custom plumbing is provided for traditional sump-filter systems when applicable. All-in-one sump systems are excluded from custom plumbing. Certain aquarium systems may use manufacturer-provided plumbing unless a different configuration is specified during the design process.

  5. System Cycling

    Before the aquarium is fully stocked, the biological filtration must become established. The cycling process helps prepare the system to safely process waste and support aquatic life.

    Water conditions are monitored, and livestock is introduced according to the needs and maturity of the system rather than rushing the aquarium into full operation.

  6. Ongoing Support

    After installation, Hydro Habitats can provide guidance, scheduled maintenance, water testing, equipment checks, livestock planning, and continued system support.

    Service can be adapted for clients who want to participate in aquarium care or for those who prefer a more hands-off maintenance plan.
